# Your first backlink report is a baseline, not a grade for the business

Read a first backlink snapshot with the right expectations. Confirm the domain, source coverage and useful referring pages before making an SEO work list.

## Your first backlink report is a baseline, not a grade for the business: working record

Use this six-field worksheet to establish domain, coverage and timestamp context before interpreting referring-link totals.

No signup. Enter reference codes, add records and download a CSV. Entries stay in the browser tab. Filled fields do not establish completion, approval or compliance.

| Configured domain | Collection date | Observed source page | Linked destination | Business relevance | Review decision |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Illustrative: example.com | Example collection date | Supplier directory reference | Current service page | Relevant installer information | Verify public destination |

- The starting row is fictional, not merchant evidence. Replace it with your own verified record. Blank fields remain unresolved.

- Create one row per decision or observation described in the article. Use the worked example to understand the method, not as proof about your business.

- Record exact public URLs and collection dates where relevant. Unknown, failed and not checked are different from a verified pass.

- Keep customer information, account credentials and private documents outside this worksheet. Use role names or internal references.

- A completed row does not prove publication, authorization, indexing, rankings or revenue. Record the actual acceptance check separately.

- Export the record to approved business storage if needed. Browser edits are cleared on reload.

A first backlink report shows what its source found. It doesn’t show every link or what Google thinks your business is worth. Check the domain, then open a few relevant source pages. The useful work begins with those actual references.

## Confirm what the report measures

BlueFinch’s [backlink monitoring tool](<https://bluefinchadvisors.com/toolbox/backlink-monitoring>) relies on a third-party index, with bounded samples saved alongside their source timestamps. It doesn’t show Google’s full internal link data. And a provider rank isn’t Google PageRank, Moz DA or Ahrefs DR. Keep those differences clear in your report label. Don’t treat every score as the same authority measure. Google’s own Search Console Links report is a sample too, and documents its grouping and deduplication rules. So different totals don’t automatically mean a tool is broken. Before comparing counts, check the configured domain, collection date, and what each report includes. Your first snapshot has no historical trend from the same source yet.

## Open the references that matter to the business

Look for supplier listings, local associations, earned articles, and other relevant pages that mention or link to your business. Follow each link. Where does it take a customer? Check that the reference is current and accurate. An unfamiliar domain means inspect it, not assume it’s harmful. Keep the source context separate from vendor labels. The [website audit tool](<https://bluefinchadvisors.com/toolbox/website-audit>) helps you investigate a broken destination on your own site. The backlink report shows an observed route from an external page. Don’t assume a page sends useful traffic just because it has a link or a high third-party score.

## Use a baseline example without inventing a target

Imagine an illustrative snapshot with 40 observed linking pages across 12 referring domains. Several pages come from one association site, and two supplier profiles point to an old service URL. Check those destinations first. That does not mean the business needs exactly 100 links. Page counts and domain counts are different, and neither tells you how many customers or appointments came in. Record useful references and corrections you’ve confirmed by inspecting the pages. Keep this snapshot as the baseline for later reports you can compare. Don’t invent an earlier period or claim a trend before you have two observations.

## Choose a review cadence that fits the actual service

BlueFinch’s current catalog describes one requested refresh attempt per account per UTC calendar month, with previous reports retained. Opening a saved report doesn’t count as another refresh. But a failed admitted attempt still uses that month’s allowance, so check the configured domain and make sure it’s ready before you request a refresh. Don’t assume the demo gives you unlimited live collection. Google notes in its link-report documentation that some observed links may have changed or disappeared since discovery. Direct inspection remains useful when a particular reference matters. A monthly snapshot helps you review links. It isn’t a real-time alert, and can’t guarantee it captures every new or removed link.

## Use the first-snapshot worksheet

Record the domain and collection date. Then add rows for source pages worth checking, with the linked destination, business relevance and a bounded decision such as verify, correct destination or no action. Keep unknowns explicit. And don’t upload a disavow file just because the baseline shows unfamiliar domains. Google says most sites don’t need that advanced tool. BlueFinch’s eligible backlink workspace lets you export a reviewed draft when justified. It doesn’t submit one automatically. The first report is done when the owner knows what you found and has a short, evidence-backed task list, not when every score looks impressive.

Keep that first review small enough to finish. For example, inspect the known association, two suppliers and one earned article before digging into unfamiliar domains with little context. That doesn’t mean the rest are harmless. It gives the owner a verified baseline of important references and a clear queue for further review that fits the risk.
