The 3.54% BlueFinch benchmark
Across complete pre-conversion merchant statements reviewed by BlueFinch, clients paid an average all-in effective rate of 3.54%. The review includes every card type and all processor-assessed fees shown on those statements.
Method: complete processor-assessed fees / settled card sales = effective rate. BlueFinch client accounts before conversion. This is a private client benchmark, not a national small-business average.
What an effective processing rate includes
The effective rate compares the complete processing bill with settled card sales from the same period. It captures percentage charges, per-transaction charges, network assessments, processor markups, gateway costs, monthly charges, and other processor-assessed fees shown on the statement.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office separates the merchant discount fee into interchange, network fees, and processor or acquiring fees. Visa and Mastercard both state that interchange is only one part of the merchant's final cost.
Credit card processing junk fees
Business owners often call the smaller statement lines junk fees. Common labels include monthly account charges, PCI compliance or noncompliance charges, gateway and batch fees, authorization or per-item charges, network assessments, and card-category differentials.
Some charges pay for a real service. The report does not declare every small fee improper. It includes every processor-assessed charge in the effective-rate calculation so the headline price cannot hide the final cost.
What 3.54% costs
At the BlueFinch benchmark, every $10,000 in card sales produces $354 in processing cost. $50,000 produces $1,770. $100,000 produces $3,540. These are arithmetic scenarios, not savings promises.
Processing cost should be compared with card sales and net income separately. A fee charged on revenue can consume a much larger percentage of profit. Gross margin and net profit margin are not interchangeable.
High-ticket industry evidence
General auto repair: $633.26 average repair order. Anonymized data from more than 10,000 North American shops using Tekmetric, February 2026. A platform customer sample, not every U.S. repair shop.
Collision repair: $4,768 average total repair cost. CCC national repairable appraisal data. Repair cost is not the same as customer-paid card volume.
Medical spas: $1,398,833 average annual revenue. AmSpa provider survey reported in its 2024 industry recap. Revenue does not reveal card share, effective rate, or profit.
Vehicle wrap shops: No clean federal category public benchmark status. Wrap activity sits inside broader automotive and sign classifications. BlueFinch does not publish an invented wrap-shop average ticket.
Window tint shops: 6,963 auto glass and tint establishments. 2022 Economic Census, NAICS 811122. The category combines automotive glass replacement and tinting. It is not a tint-only benchmark.
How to use the report
Start with settled card sales and complete processor-assessed fees from the same statement period. Review at least three representative months. Keep cash, checks, ACH, financing proceeds, insurer payments, and unpaid invoices out of card volume.
Use published industry data for context. Use the merchant's own statements for the decision. A trade association, platform sample, Census category, and BlueFinch client benchmark describe different populations and should not be blended into one average.

The live report lets an owner change monthly revenue, card share, effective rate, and net profit margin. It returns monthly card sales, monthly cost, annualized cost, share of entered profit, and the extra sales required to replace the fee.
